Behavioral Scientist
Symend takes a science-driven approach to customer engagement – and behavioral science is at the core of that. Our behavioral scientists leverage neuroscience, psychology and behavioral economics to develop iterative strategies that engage and retain financially at-risk customers for our telecommunications and financial services clients. As part of the strategy team, behavioral scientists utilize insights from biometric and in-field experimentation to determine the tactics we use, such as empathy and loss aversion, to continue to drive desired outcomes for our clients. By getting creative on messaging, delivery and treatment, behavioral scientists help nudge customers towards self-treatment and better payment behavior.Meet Annamarie Huttunen, Behavioral Scientist on the Strategy team
“I decided to join the team because it was clear to me that Symend has the right idea at the right time. As a behavioral scientist, I know that punishment is rarely the best behavioral tactic to use, yet it is what the collections space has relied on. In the past 3 months, I have worked with some amazing people to change that. Our goal is to use positive reinforcement, education and other science-driven methods to bring empathy and humanity back to individuals who are experiencing financial difficulty.”
Data Scientist
The contributions of the data science team are crucial to the success and value of Symend’s solution. By using data, predictive analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning, Symend’s data-driven approach improves a client’s ability to engage at-risk customers. Our data scientists research and evaluate advanced statistical techniques to augment existing customer data, test multiple variables and learn from customer behaviors to enhance future performance. To be successful as a data scientist at Symend, you need an intuitive understanding of data and the ability to build long term solutions while addressing short term problems.Meet Ziko Rajabali, Senior Director of Data on the Product and Engineering team

Strong candidates will have impressive attention to detail, deep understanding and experience in Azure cloud technologies, data science technology requirements and programming experience to connect the dots between various aspects of Symend’s solution.Meet JT Smith, DevOps Engineer on the Product and Engineering team
“I decided to join Symend because I deeply believe that every person going through financial issues should be treated with dignity. Symend is the first and, to this day, the only company I’ve heard of that has considered the person going through the debt recovery process. After learning that they were using forward-thinking technologies, like serverless and AI, to accomplish this mission, I knew it was where I needed to be. In the past 2 months, I have learned everything from how we can use technology to humanize a very dehumanizing process, to what the very future of debt collection could look like.”

The goal at the end of the day is to ensure everyone feels in the loop and aligned.Meet Jennifer Chan, Senior Project Manager in Client Success
“I decided to join Symend because I was ready to take the plunge with a (at the time) start-up which has now grown into a midsize company. In the past year, I have worked with very motivated and talented people, made lifelong friends, onboarded our first financial institution and witnessed Symend’s exciting growth. I have learned a lot from our strong and capable leaders who are grounded, and willing to learn and listen. This company has lots of challenging work for those of us who are willing to roll up our sleeves, and a lot of opportunity for career growth.”Meet Jennifer Chan, Senior Project Manager in Client Success

LinkedIn Top Startups selection methodology:
LinkedIn measures startups based on four pillars: employment growth, engagement, job interest and attraction of top talent. Employment growth is measured as percentage headcount increase over methodology time frame, which must be a minimum of 15%. Engagement looks at non-employee views and follows of the company’s LinkedIn page, as well as how many non-employees are viewing employees at that startup. Job interest counts rate at which people are viewing and applying to jobs at the company, including both paid and unpaid postings. Attraction of top talent measures how many employees the startup has recruited away from any global LinkedIn Top Company, as a percentage of the startup’s total workforce. Data is normalized across all eligible startups. The methodology time frame is January through July 2020.
To be eligible, companies must be independent and privately held, have 50 or more full-time employees, be 7 years old or younger and be headquartered in the country on whose list they appear. We exclude all staffing firms, think tanks, venture capital firms, law firms, management and IT consulting firms, nonprofits and philanthropy, accelerators and government-owned entities. Startups who have laid off 20% or more of their workforce within the methodology time frame are also ineligible.
